You can submit information to Selective Service at age 17 years and 3 months old and be automatically registered when you turn 18.

Winter Sports - Tryouts begin on November 1. Please check www.broughtonathletics.com for the time of each sport's tryout. Please stop by the table outside the front of the Holliday Gym on Monday, October 29 or Tuesday, October 30 - during your lunch or from 2:20 PM - 3:15 PM to verify your physical on file is current or to turn in a new physical. No one will be allowed to participate in tryouts without a current physical on file.

Sophomores: Broughton has been asked to nominate one outstanding sophomore for the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar [HOBY]. HOBY, one of the oldest and most prominent youth leadership organizations in the world, was founded by actor Hugh O'Brian after returning from spending nine inspirational days working and volunteering with Dr. Albert Schweitzer, the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize Winner. Broughton's nominee will attend a HOBY Weekend Retreat on the campus of NCSU scheduled for June 14-16. Two years ago, Broughton's HOBY Ambassador was Huston Wallace. COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

The Realtor Foundation of the Triangle is hosting a Regional Housing Event and needs volunteers (minimum age is 16) to help with a landscaping project in the Meadow Creek neighborhood. The event is scheduled for Saturday, November 3rd, from 8:30am-2pm in the Meadow Creek neighborhood at Blazing Star Lane [off Rock Quarry Rd] in downtown Raleigh. The Red Sword Guild is looking for volunteers to help with their annual Round Up event, "Giving Cancer the Boot". There are three dates for volunteers to participate. The Fallon Park Garden Club has Adopted Fallon Park with Raleigh Parks & Rec. and our fall clean up day has been scheduled from 9 - 12pm, Sat. Nov. 3rd. at the Fallon Park picnic shelter (corner of Oxford and Hazelwood/Beechridge) rain or shine and often pick up trash, clean/prune invasives, spread mulch, and pull debris to the edge of the park to be picked up. We will have water and tools and perhaps some goodies provided by our garden club members. I have the Parks and Rec Release forms which must be signed the day of and if they're <18 a parent or guardian also has to sign. Parks & Rec prefers that students younger than 16 have a parent help them.

The Martin Green Team is looking for volunteers for Sat., 11/3 from 8am until noon to weed, mulch .plant and other landscaping jobs. Volunteers will need to bring work gloves. Bringing wheelbarrows, pitchforks/turning forks and hard rakes, if you have them, will be greatly appreciated. Blue Jay Point County Park has several volunteer opportunities available this Fall. Big Sweep on Sat., 10/6 from 9am-Noon (can work partial shifts) to help clean up Falls Lake shoreline. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat and insect repellant, and wear closed toe shoes.. Volunteers under 16 must have a supervising adult with them. Recyclables on Sat., 10/6 from 1-3pm to help sort and weigh trash and recyclables. Wear closed toe shoes. For both above events volunteers must sign a Waiver (found online). Night Owls Craft Workday on Sat., 11/3 from 1-4pm to help prepare craft materials for upcoming Night Owls and Candle Magic family festival and Night Owls and Candle Magic Guides on Sat., 11/17 from 5:30-9:30pm to be group guides on their Night Owls and Candle Magic luminary and owl learning trail (volunteers must partic ipate in both Night Owls events). SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERCLASSMEN
The Piedmont-Coastal Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) is participating again this year in the SPE "Wonders of Plastics" Essay Contest. Middle and high school students in the Triangle area are being asked to submit essays dealing with some aspect of plastics, which will be judged by a committee from our local section. The winner of the local competition will receive a new iPod Touch, and the winner's school will receive a donation of $250. The winner will also have their essay printed in our monthly newsletter (the Perspective) which is circulated throughout North Carolina. The winner and his/her parents and teacher will also be invited our February 2013 local section meeting, where you will be our guests for dinner. The winner will be recognized along with other students who have received scholarships and awards from the SPE Piedmont-Coastal Section this year. The winning essay at the section level will also be submitted to SPE headquarters as an entry in the international competition. The winner of that competition and his/her school will each receive a $1000 prize, and the winning essay will be printed in Plastics Engineering magazine. The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund 2012 Youth Essay Contest is open to students divided into two categories- grade 9 and below, and grade 10 through 12. In keeping with the mission of the NRA, the theme for the essay is "The Second Amendment to the Constitution: Why it is important to our nation." First place cash prizes are $1,000, $600 for second place prizes, $200 for third place prizes, and $100 for honorable mention. Prizes will be awarded for each category. The JFK Profile in Courage Essay Contest is once again being offered to United States high school students in grades 9 through 12 attending public, private, parochial, or home schools. The first place winner will receive a $10,000 prize, a second place winner will receive $1,000, and up to 5 finalists will receive $500.This contest asks students to write an essay of 1,000 words or less on "a U.S. elected official who has chosen to do what is right, rather than what is expedient." Specifically, this year's entries must deal with the following prompt: Describe and analyze an act of political courage by a United States elected official that took place during or after 1956. Include an analysis of the obstacles, risks, and consequences associated with the act. The essay may concern an issue at the local, state, national, or international level.Essays will be accepted starting September 1, 2012, and the final submission deadline is January 5, 2013. Veterans of Foreign Wars' Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program. The Voice of Democracy Program is open to students in grades 9-12, who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the U.S. and its territories. Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. This year's theme is, Is Our Constitution Still Relevant? Prizes and scholarships are awarded at the local, district, state and national level. State winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., March 2-6, 2013, to tour and receive their awards, the top scholarship being $30,000. DAR's Christopher Columbus Essay Contest. The DAR sponsors this contest with the National Italian American foundation [NIAF] in honor of Christopher Columbus. Each academic year, an essay topic is chosen and contest instructions are made available online at http://www.dar.org/natsociety/essays.cfm. The contest is open to students in grades 9-12. One winning essay from each participating chapter is submitted for judging on the state level. Each state winner is judged on the divisional level and the divisional winners move on to the national level, where the winner is announced. The contest winner will receive $1,200 plus a trip to D.C. to present their essay at the Columbus Memorial on Columbus Day 2013.

The North Carolina Junior Elon Scholars Program serves academically talented high school juniors. Applicants must demonstrate superior academic achievement and exceptional involvement in activities which are high valued as part of an Elon education. Selection is not based upon financial need. Benefits include the opportunity for early notification of acceptance to Elon, early consideration for a Presidential Scholarship valued at $18,000 over four years, and an invitation to apply for Elon's prestigious Fellows Academic and Scholarship programs. Candidates for a North Carolina Junior Elon Scholars award should have an "A" average and a combined critical reading, math and writing SAT score of 1870 or higher. First Freedom Student Competition. This is a national essay and video contest. It offers high-school students an opportunity to compete for $2,500 awards as they examine the history and current-day relevance of religious freedom, and then, by written essay or video production, present their evaluation. Essay winners will receive$2,500 as will video winners. The online registration deadline is Monday, November 12, postmark entry deadline is Monday, November 26, and the video upload deadline is Monday, November 26. FIRE's Freedom in Academia Essay Contest. The contest is open to high school juniors and seniors who will be graduating in the spring of 2013 or 2014. The essay contest consists of writing a 800-1,000 word essay on the topic "Why is free speech important at our nation's colleges and universities?"
FIRE is the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education organization whose purpose is to help defend individual rights at American colleges and universities. They work to protect four primary areas of freedom: freedom of speech, religious freedom, freedom of conscience and legal equality on campus.
One first-place winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship, second-place receives a $5,000 scholarship, and three $1,000 awards will be given to runner-up essays. Prudential Spirit of Community Award. This program is a nationwide program for students in grades 5-12 who are volunteering in their communities. Interest applicants must apply online and then submit their applications to Broughton for certification in order to be considered. Students chosen as Local Honorees receive a Certificate of Achievement from their schools. Those who qualify [100 hours of service] also receive the President's Volunteer Service Award. State Honorees receive an award of $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C. for national recognition events. National Honorees receive an additional award of $5,000, an engraved gold medallion, a crystal trophy for their school and a $5,000 grant from The Prudential Foundation for a non-profit, charitable organization of their choice. Persian Scholarship Foundation This essay competition is for students of Iranian descent who are studying in the United States. It is open to high school students and students in both undergraduate and graduate college programs in the U.S. Students applying must submit an essay they have written that has also been published in the local or school newspaper. The essay should discuss the heritage of the Iranian people and how they have contributed to our society, or the achievements of scientists and scholars who are Iranian. One winner from each of three categories will be selected. The High School Recognition Award is $500, the Undergraduate Recognition Award and the Graduate Recognition Award are each $1,000. Applicants will be judged on their academic merits and the original content and overall effectiveness of their essay. The Persian Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Iranian students studying in the U.S. The foundation encourages students to share their knowledge about the Persian culture, history and heritage. The deadline for this scholarship is usually in DECEMBER of each year, and the award amount is usually $1,000.

Action For Nature International Young Eco-Hero Awards. Action For Nature [AFN], a non-profit organization, has created the International Young Eco-Hero Awards to recognize and reward the successful individual environmental initiatives of young people ages 8 to 16. The winners receive a cash prize and a special certificate, as well as public recognition on the AFN website and elsewhere. The judges are experts in environmental science, biology and environmental health. Applications will be judged according to originality, difficulty, organization, length of time devoted to the project, use of outside resources, and the impact on the environment. The project must concern environmental health, be self-initiated [not one assigned by a teacher or other adult], and completed or close to completion. SUMMER ENRICHMENT/LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES [2012-2013]

Oxbridge Academic Programs offers academic summer programs in Oxford and Cambridge, Paris and Montpellier, Barcelona, and New York. The programs in Oxford, Cambridge and New York offer students the chance to challenge themselves in disciplines such as Art History, Literature, Politics and Economics, Drama, Creative Writing, and speech and debate as well as Global Medicine, International Law, Business & Finance, Architecture, or Filmmaking. The General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Challenge is a prospective week-long summer opportunity for rising 9th-12th graders. The Shelton Challenge provides students with a dynamic experience that allows them to discover their true leadership potential. The Shelton Challenge's curriculum revolves around the five values of leadership: integrity, compassion, social responsibility, diversity, and honesty. A curriculum designed by General Henry Hugh Shelton, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Shelton Challenge was initiated to inspire and create future leaders who are well established in the principals of values-based leadership.
