College-bound students whose career plans, or extracurricular interests, involve horses: The 2012 8th Annual Equine Extravaganza is hosting an Equestrian College Fair in conjunction with a horse expo November 2-4 at the Richmond Raceway Complex. The program will include representatives from Virginia Intermont College, Tiffin University, Sweet Briar College, Mt. Holyoke College, Hollins University, Findlay College, Centenary College, Bethany College and Lake Erie College. For more information, go online at www.equineextravaganza.com.

The Reflections program requests creative, original arts submissions in visual arts, dance choreography, music composition, photography, film production, or literature. Students who participate can earn up to five community service hours. The Broughton creative community can get details from their arts or technology department or from Mrs. Carty in visual arts. Students are encouraged to create an artwork using the theme, 'The Magic of a Moment'. Compositions are due to Mrs. Carty by November 6. Again, please contact your arts or technology teacher for details including an entry form that MUST be signed by your parents. Begin creating now and show "the Magic of a Moment" using your favorite art form. Compositions will be judged by local artists and Broughton's winners will move ahead to the council level, to be judged and hopefully move on to the national level! Broughton winners will not only get community service hours, but recognition in local publications and a prize! Questions? The Reach Out And Touch Tutoring Program, sponsored by the National Society of Black Engineers at NCSU, will have four dates for tutoring this semester, including October 13, October 27, November 10, and December 1. Normally, the sessions will be held in the First Year College Commons (2751 Cates Ave, Raleigh, NC 27607). However, due to North Carolina State University Open House,for the the first session, October 13, we will meet the students in front of Talley Student Center (2610 Cates Ave, Raleigh, NC 27607) and escort them to Daniels Hall a near by academic building on our campus. The sessions will be from 11AM-1PM, we ask that the students arrive by 10:50 so that we can get the most out of the two hour time period. As far as registration goes, there is a form attached to this email in which we are requesting guardians fill out and turn in when they drop the student off. In addition to that form, there is also an online registration portion. The link for that is provided below. It is also on our flyer, which too is attached to this email. Seniors planning to attend UNC-CH next year: If you could dedicate a year between high school and college - a "gap year" - to public service anywhere in the world, where would you go? UNC Chapel Hill's Global Gap Year Fellowship annually supports seven incoming first-year students as they explore international affairs and global citizenship. Only students who have applied EARLY ACTION are eligible to apply for the fellowship. The Fellowship provides financial support for an international gap year that combines work, travel, and volunteer service for a minimum of 6 months. The Fellowship will be awarded on a competitive basis to first-year students who are admitted for Fall 2013, plan to enroll at UNC, and are interested in delaying their enrollment for one year in order to have a "gap" experience. The Fellowship will provide up to $7,500 toward travel, living expenses, and other associated costs. The Global Gap Year Fellowship seeks diverse applicants who are eager to explore the world and who are not afraid to challenge themselves. Thinking about a health care career? Don't miss the opportunity to attend Health Careers Day on the Hill Tuesday, October 16, 2012, 9am - 4pm. You'll be able to hear health care presentation from UNC's Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dental, Nursing and the Department of Allied Health Science. Sophomores: Broughton has been asked to nominate one outstanding sophomore for the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar [HOBY]. HOBY, one of the oldest and most prominent youth leadership organizations in the world, was founded by actor Hugh O'Brian after returning from spending nine inspirational days working and volunteering with Dr. Albert Schweitzer, the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize Winner. Broughton's nominee will attend a HOBY Weekend Retreat on the campus of NCSU scheduled for June 14-16. Two years ago, Broughton's HOBY Ambassador was Huston Wallace. The 2013 Health Professions Recruitment Exposure Program [HPREP], a program designed for students from groups that are underrepresented in the health professions, including African-American, Latino and Native American students, and economically disadvantaged students, is being offered again at the UNC School of Medicine. HPREP is a free, medical interdisciplinary and general health science exposure program offered on seven Saturdays from January 26th through March 9th for local high school students. The program encompasses lectures, labs, and tests on medical issues impacting the minority community. Application materials can be found online at http://www.med.unc.edu/snma/hprep. COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

The Fallon Park Garden Club has Adopted Fallon Park with Raleigh Parks & Rec. and our fall clean up day has been scheduled from 9 - 12pm, Sat. Nov. 3rd. at the Fallon Park picnic shelter (corner of Oxford and Hazelwood/Beechridge) rain or shine and often pick up trash, clean/prune invasives, spread mulch, and pull debris to the edge of the park to be picked up. We will have water and tools and perhaps some goodies provided by our garden club members. I have the Parks and Rec Release forms which must be signed the day of and if they're <18 a parent or guardian also has to sign. Parks & Rec prefers that students younger than 16 have a parent help them.

The Martin Green Team is looking for volunteers for Sat., 11/3 from 8am until noon to weed, mulch .plant and other landscaping jobs. Volunteers will need to bring work gloves. Bringing wheelbarrows, pitchforks/turning forks and hard rakes, if you have them, will be greatly appreciated. The City of Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department is looking for volunteers for their Boo Bash - Halloween Carnival at the Brier Creek Community Center (10810 Globe Road ) on Friday, 10/19 from 5:30-9pm. NBHS Class of 1982 needs 4 rising seniors to volunteer for their 30th reunion. Four volunteers are needed on Friday, 10/26, from 3:30-5:30pm.to spruce up the event location grounds. Four volunteers (2 guys and 2 girls) are also needed on Sat.,10/27, from 6:30pm-9:30 for the actual event. Guys will be directing attendees to entrances, and girls will be hosting the meet and greet information table. Volunteers are welcome to dine for free after completing their volunteer service. Blue Jay Point County Park has several volunteer opportunities available this Fall. Big Sweep on Sat., 10/6 from 9am-Noon (can work partial shifts) to help clean up Falls Lake shoreline. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat and insect repellant, and wear closed toe shoes.. Volunteers under 16 must have a supervising adult with them. Recyclables on Sat., 10/6 from 1-3pm to help sort and weigh trash and recyclables. Wear closed toe shoes. For both above events volunteers must sign a Waiver (found online). Night Owls Craft Workday on Sat., 11/3 from 1-4pm to help prepare craft materials for upcoming Night Owls and Candle Magic family festival and Night Owls and Candle Magic Guides on Sat., 11/17 from 5:30-9:30pm to be group guides on their Night Owls and Candle Magic luminary and owl learning trail (volunteers must partic ipate in both Night Owls events). During Tower Time, Juniors and Seniors will have the opportunity to tutor and earn community service. If you are interested in tutoring and earning community service during the school day, please go by Ms. White's office, room 1212, where you will find a sign-up sheet outside the door. Please know that you will have to identify the subject or subjects you feel qualified to tutor and go through an approval process. Teachers, please encourage students who will benefit from this opportunity to participate.

Centro Internacional de Raleigh (CIR) is in need of a computer savvy volunteer to clean up their Excel database, their Outlook contacts, and handle their Twitter and Facebook postings. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERCLASSMEN

Veterans of Foreign Wars' Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program. The Voice of Democracy Program is open to students in grades 9-12, who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the U.S. and its territories. Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. This year's theme is, Is Our Constitution Still Relevant? Prizes and scholarships are awarded at the local, district, state and national level. State winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., March 2-6, 2013, to tour and receive their awards, the top scholarship being $30,000. DAR's Christopher Columbus Essay Contest. The DAR sponsors this contest with the National Italian American foundation [NIAF] in honor of Christopher Columbus. Each academic year, an essay topic is chosen and contest instructions are made available online at http://www.dar.org/natsociety/essays.cfm. The contest is open to students in grades 9-12. One winning essay from each participating chapter is submitted for judging on the state level. Each state winner is judged on the divisional level and the divisional winners move on to the national level, where the winner is announced. The contest winner will receive $1,200 plus a trip to D.C. to present their essay at the Columbus Memorial on Columbus Day 2013.

First Freedom Student Competition. This is a national essay and video contest. It offers high-school students an opportunity to compete for $2,500 awards as they examine the history and current-day relevance of religious freedom, and then, by written essay or video production, present their evaluation. Essay winners will receive$2,500 as will video winners. The online registration deadline is Monday, November 12, postmark entry deadline is Monday, November 26, and the video upload deadline is Monday, November 26. FIRE's Freedom in Academia Essay Contest. The contest is open to high school juniors and seniors who will be graduating in the spring of 2013 or 2014. The essay contest consists of writing a 800-1,000 word essay on the topic "Why is free speech important at our nation's colleges and universities?"
FIRE is the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education organization whose purpose is to help defend individual rights at American colleges and universities. They work to protect four primary areas of freedom: freedom of speech, religious freedom, freedom of conscience and legal equality on campus.
One first-place winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship, second-place receives a $5,000 scholarship, and three $1,000 awards will be given to runner-up essays. Prudential Spirit of Community Award. This program is a nationwide program for students in grades 5-12 who are volunteering in their communities. Interest applicants must apply online and then submit their applications to Broughton for certification in order to be considered. Students chosen as Local Honorees receive a Certificate of Achievement from their schools. Those who qualify [100 hours of service] also receive the President's Volunteer Service Award. State Honorees receive an award of $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C. for national recognition events. National Honorees receive an additional award of $5,000, an engraved gold medallion, a crystal trophy for their school and a $5,000 grant from The Prudential Foundation for a non-profit, charitable organization of their choice. United States Senate Youth Program. This program provides a unique educational experience for outstanding high school junior and senior leaders interested in pursuing careers in public service. Two student leaders from each state will spend a week in D.C. experiencing their national government in action. All transportation, hotel and meal expenses with be provided. In addition, each delegate will also be awarded a $5,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science. Applicants must hold elected leadership positions at their school. SUMMER ENRICHMENT/LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES [2012-2013]

Oxbridge Academic Programs offers academic summer programs in Oxford and Cambridge, Paris and Montpellier, Barcelona, and New York. The programs in Oxford, Cambridge and New York offer students the chance to challenge themselves in disciplines such as Art History, Literature, Politics and Economics, Drama, Creative Writing, and speech and debate as well as Global Medicine, International Law, Business & Finance, Architecture, or Filmmaking. The programs in Barcelona & Paris offer Spanish & French language classes at all levels as well as courses in Spanish & French. By contrast, the program in Montpellier is complete immersion. Rochester Institute of Technology offers a six-day career awareness program, Explore Your Future, for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students. This summer camp provides students an opportunity to experience college life, enjoy hands-on activities and get a taste of real-world careers in the fields of business, computing, engineering, science and art. The General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Challenge is a prospective week-long summer opportunity for rising 9th-12th graders. The Shelton Challenge provides students with a dynamic experience that allows them to discover their true leadership potential. The Shelton Challenge's curriculum revolves around the five values of leadership: integrity, compassion, social responsibility, diversity, and honesty. A curriculum designed by General Henry Hugh Shelton, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Shelton Challenge was initiated to inspire and create future leaders who are well established in the principals of values-based leadership. In this weeklong experience, high school students are offered opportunities to lead that may be found nowhere else.
