Today is the last day to order pansies for the Sophomore Class fundraiser. The order forms are on the Broughton website under forms. Pansies will be delivered on October 23.
Congratulations to Fiona Dunn & Samantha Reid, scholarship winners of the Wade Edwards Short Fiction Contest. The award is given annually to three North Carolina high school juniors who submit the most outstanding original short fiction. The competition, administered and supported by the North Carolina English Teachers Association and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, is sponsored by the Wade Edwards Foundation. First place ($5,000) winner Fiona Dunn, submitted "The Rot and the Rose." Fiona's teacher was Christine Molloy and her parents are Laura Woods and Dusty Dunn. The Broughton English Department will also receive $2,000. "The Pain of the Bullet" earned third place honors ($1,000) for Samantha Reid. Her parents are Scott and Kathy Reid and her teacher was Chelsey Saunders. Winners' stories will be posted at http://wade.org/pages/shortfictionaward.html.
Juniors.......Are you interested in being considered for Governor's School?
Come to the meeting Tuesday, September 25th, during Caps Class. The meeting will be in the auditorium and will last for about 30 minutes. Governor's School is an exceptional summer experience for academically, intellectually and artistically gifted students in academic and arts areas. The program is held on college campuses and lasts six weeks. There is a rigorous screening process for the applicants since we can send only a limited number of applicants.
LGBT Students: The Black Butterfly Scholarship Foundation is sponsoring a debutante-beautillion program for LGBT juniors and seniors in and throughout Wake County and surrounding cities. Informational seminars will be held Sunday, September 23 and October 7, at the LGBT Center, 411 Hillsborough Street. The sessions will provide specific information about the program including criteria requirements and expectations.
Edison Johnson Recreation Center has partnered with Durham Public Schools and the National Scholarship Service (NSS) Organization to bring a College Fair to Durham, NC on October 9th, 2012, from 8:00am to 1:00pm. NSS will bring more than 40 colleges and universities, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's), as well as the Department of Education, to the "BULL CITY" to grant youth with the opportunity to dream of college. The WELL is offering another ACT/SAT TEST PREP series according to the following schedule:

Bennington College, a liberal arts college in Vermont, has announced its 14th annual Young Writer Award competition. Students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades may enter in one of the following categories: poetry [a group of three poems], fiction [a short story or one-act play], or nonfiction [a personal or academic essay]. All entries must be original work and sponsored by a high school teachers.1st place: $500. 2nd place: $250. First- and second-place prizes will be awarded for each genre. The WELL has scheduled a morning workshop on Saturday, September 22, from 10am-noon entitled "College 101: Figuring out your next steps after high school." Sophomores: The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics [NCSSM] is a public, residential high school for academically talented juniors and seniors designed to educate tomorrow's scientific and technological leaders. Selected students live on the Durham campus during their junior and seniors years of high school and graduate from NCSSM. Students accepted in the online program take NCSSM courses at their home high school. Applications for the Class of 2015 will be accepted from 10th grade students beginning October 15th through January 15th. Students may access electronic applications by visiting www.ncssm.edu/admissions. Interested students are required to take the SAT in October, November, December or January of their sophomore year. Students must use the special program code: 2241 in Block 11A assigned to NCSSM Admissions, and use Broughton's high school code, 343225, in Block 5 when completing the SAT registration form. Senior Scholars Considering Davidson: Broughton has been asked to nominate one senior for it prestigious John Montgomery Belk Scholarship valued at $49,000. Students interested in being nominated may pick up applications in the Guidance Resource Center. Completed requests must be returned by Friday, October 26th.
Sophomores & Juniors: The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test [PSAT/NMSQT] will be given at Broughton during the school day on Wednesday, October 17. The test measures critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills and writing skills. It is not only a good "practice SAT," it is also the qualifying test for juniors as they compete in the National Merit and National Achievement Scholarship Programs. Students who take the test receive access to My College QuickStart, a free personalized college and career planning kit. The year, sophomores will be scheduled to take the test free of charge. The fee for juniors will be $14 and checks should be made payable to "Broughton High School." The registration period is Wednesday, October 3 - Friday, October 12. The 2013 Health Professions Recruitment Exposure Program [HPREP], a program designed for students from groups that are underrepresented in the health professions, including African-American, Latino and Native American students, and economically disadvantaged students, is being offered again at the UNC School of Medicine. HPREP is a free, medical interdisciplinary and general health science exposure program offered on seven Saturdays from January 26th through March 9th for local high school students. The program encompasses lectures, labs, and tests on medical issues impacting the minority community. Application materials can be found online at http://www.med.unc.edu/snma/hprep. Completed applications will be accepted through Tuesday, November 20, 2012.
Junior Year Athletes: Colleges are affiliated with athletic associations that have their own rules, regulations, and eligibility requirements. NCAA-Division I and II colleges can offer athletic scholarships; Division III colleges cannot. Athletes who want to go to a Division I or Division II college must have a minimum GPA in a specified number of core courses. They must also have the required SAT or ACT score. Athletes should take the ACT or the SAT in the spring of their junior year and should register with www.eligibilitycenter.org.
COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
NBHS Class of 1982 needs 4 rising seniors to volunteer for their 30th reunion. Four volunteers are needed on Friday, 10/26, from 3:30-5:30pm.to spruce up the event location grounds. Four volunteers (2 guys and 2 girls) are also needed on Sat.,10/27, from 6:30pm-9:30 for the actual event. Guys will be directing attendees to entrances, and girls will be hosting the meet and greet information table. Volunteers are welcome to dine for free after completing their volunteer service. Hayes Barton Baptist Church (1800 Glenwood Avenue) needs volunteers for their Children's Consignment Sale. Volunteers are needed for the following dates/times: Tue. 9/18 from 4-7pm to organize donations; Wed., 9/19pm from 3-6pm to organize donations; Thurs., 9/20 from 5:15-8:45pm to assist with sales; Fri., 9/21 from 2-5:45pm to assist with sales; and Sat., 9/22 from 7:45am-5pm to assist with sales and clean up. Blue Jay Point County Park has several volunteer opportunities available this Fall. Big Sweep on Sat., 10/6 from 9am-Noon (can work partial shifts) to help clean up Falls Lake shoreline. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat and insect repellant, and wear closed toe shoes.. Volunteers under 16 must have a supervising adult with them. Recyclables on Sat., 10/6 from 1-3pm to help sort and weigh trash and recyclables. Wear closed toe shoes. For both above events volunteers must sign a Waiver (found online). Night Owls Craft Workday on Sat., 11/3 from 1-4pm to help prepare craft materials for upcoming Night Owls and Candle Magic family festival and Night Owls and Candle Magic Guides on Sat., 11/17 from 5:30-9:30pm to be group guides on their Night Owls and Candle Magic luminary and owl learning trail (volunteers must partic ipate in both Night Owls events). If you are interested in tutoring and earning community service during the school day, please go by Ms. White's office, room 1212, where you will find a sign-up sheet outside the door. Please know that you will have to identify the subject or subjects you feel qualified to tutor and go through an approval process. Teachers, please encourage students who will benefit from this opportunity to participate.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERCLASSMEN
Veterans of Foreign Wars' Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program. The Voice of Democracy Program is open to students in grades 9-12, who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the U.S. and its territories. Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. This year's theme is, Is Our Constitution Still Relevant? Prizes and scholarships are awarded at the local, district, state and national level. State winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., March 2-6, 2013, to tour and receive their awards, the top scholarship being $30,000. DAR's Christopher Columbus Essay Contest. The DAR sponsors this contest with the National Italian American foundation [NIAF] in honor of Christopher Columbus. Each academic year, an essay topic is chosen and contest instructions are made available online at http://www.dar.org/natsociety/essays.cfm. The contest is open to students in grades 9-12. One winning essay from each participating chapter is submitted for judging on the state level. Each state winner is judged on the divisional level and the divisional winners move on to the national level, where the winner is announced. The contest winner will receive $1,200 plus a trip to D.C. to present their essay at the Columbus Memorial on Columbus Day 2013.
Prudential Spirit of Community Award. This program is a nationwide program for students in grades 5-12 who are volunteering in their communities. Interest applicants must apply online and then submit their applications to Broughton for certification in order to be considered. Students chosen as Local Honorees receive a Certificate of Achievement from their schools. Those who qualify [100 hours of service] also receive the President's Volunteer Service Award. State Honorees receive an award of $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C. for national recognition events. National Honorees receive an additional award of $5,000, an engraved gold medallion, a crystal trophy for their school and a $5,000 grant from The Prudential Foundation for a non-profit, charitable organization of their choice. United States Senate Youth Program. This program provides a unique educational experience for outstanding high school junior and senior leaders interested in pursuing careers in public service. Two student leaders from each state will spend a week in D.C. experiencing their national government in action. All transportation, hotel and meal expenses with be provided. In addition, each delegate will also be awarded a $5,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science. Applicants must hold elected leadership positions at their school.
