[PARENTS] The Wade Edwards Foundation & Learning Lab is a nonprofit computer and learning center. It provides supervised after-school programs for Wake County high school students, including access to our computer facility. The WELL provides staff assistance, free tutoring & homework help; technology classes for students, teachers and members of the community; regular speaker forums for enrichment and opportunities for students to fulfill community service hour requirements.

Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors who exhibit academic excellence, leadership skills and an interest in the fields of foreign affairs or national security: Broughton has been asked to nominate top students to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security [NYLF/NS]: Exploring American Diplomacy, Intelligence & Defense to be held in Washington, D.C. this spring 2012. During six days of firsthand experiences, participants will explore some of our country's most technologically advanced military facilities and policy centers. In addition, students will meet with some of our nation's foremost decision makers, diplomats and military leaders - all charged with keeping our nation safe. Participants may also receive college credit through George Mason University. If interested, see Mr. Rudder in the Guidance Resource Center.

AES Engineers scholarship deadline, October 5th, is less than a month away. We will be awarding $500 to the winner(s) each year. Applicants must submit an essay on one of the two topics that appear on the scholarship page of the web site at http://www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm. Applicants do not have to take engineering courses to be eligible.

The 2013 Health Professions Recruitment Exposure Program [HPREP], a program designed for students from groups that are underrepresented in the health professions, including African-American, Latino and Native American students, and economically disadvantaged students, is being offered again at the UNC School of Medicine. HPREP is a free, medical interdisciplinary and general health science exposure program offered on seven Saturdays from January 26th through March 9th for local high school students. The program encompasses lectures, labs, and tests on medical issues impacting the minority community. Application materials can be found online at http://www.med.unc.edu/snma/hprep. Completed applications will be accepted through Tuesday, November 20, 2012.

The African American Leadership Initiative [AALI], an organization that honors individuals and community leaders whose annual gifts to United Way are $1,200 or more, sponsors an Essay Contest for African American elementary, middle, and high school students in the Durham, Johnston, Orange & Wake County public schools. High school students are asked to respond to the following question in 500 words or less: Explain the role that literacy has played in shaping African-American history and how this history has inspired your volunteerism, leadership, and/or career aspirations. In addition, high school students must submit 2 letters of recommendation detailing how they have shown a commitment to community service through their volunteer efforts and why they should be recognized as a Community Volunteer. Completed essays must be submitted by October 1, 2012, to Constance V. COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

NBHS Class of 1982 needs 4 rising seniors to volunteer for their 30th reunion. Four volunteers are needed on Friday, 10/26, from 3:30-5:30pm.to spruce up the event location grounds. Four volunteers (2 guys and 2 girls) are also needed on Sat.,10/27, from 6:30pm-9:30 for the actual event. Guys will be directing attendees to entrances, and girls will be hosting the meet and greet information table. Volunteers are welcome to dine for free after completing their volunteer service. Hayes Barton Baptist Church (1800 Glenwood Avenue) needs volunteers for their Children's Consignment Sale. Volunteers are needed for the following dates/times: Sun., 9/16 starting at 1pm to set up for sale; Mon., 9/17 from 4-7pm to organize donations; Tue. 9/18 from 4-7pm to organize donations; Wed., 9/19pm from 3-6pm to organize donations; Thurs., 9/20 from 5:15-8:45pm to assist with sales; Fri., 9/21 from
2-5:45pm to assist with sales; and Sat., 9/22 from 7:45am-5pm to assist with sales and clean up. Volunteer shifts can be as long or short as students are available. Blue Jay Point County Park has several volunteer opportunities available this Fall. Big Sweep on Sat., 10/6 from 9am-Noon (can work partial shifts) to help clean up Falls Lake shoreline. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat and insect repellant, and wear closed toe shoes.. Volunteers under 16 must have a supervising adult with them. Recyclables on Sat., 10/6 from 1-3pm to help sort and weigh trash and recyclables. Wear closed toe shoes. For both above events volunteers must sign a Waiver (found online). Night Owls Craft Workday on Sat., 11/3 from 1-4pm to help prepare craft materials for upcoming Night Owls and Candle Magic family festival and Night Owls and Candle Magic Guides on Sat., 11/17 from 5:30-9:30pm to be group guides on their Night Owls and Candle Magic luminary and owl learning trail (volunteers must partic ipate in both Night Owls events). The 31st Annual Greek Festival will be held at the NC State Fairgrounds [Exposition Center] the weekend of September 14, 15, and 16. Volunteers are needed to wait and clean tables. Friday, table cleaning starts at 5:00pm. Saturday and Sunday, table cleaning starts at 11:00am.Volunteers must wear appropriate clothing and tennis shoes for safety. No flip-flops! Tell the persons at the door that you are community service workers from Broughton. Proceed to the right of the stage behind the black curtain. A church worker will give you an apron and direct you. During Tower Time, Juniors and Seniors will have the opportunity to tutor and earn community service. If you are interested in tutoring and earning community service during the school day, please go by Ms. White's office, room 1212, where you will find a sign-up sheet outside the door. Please know that you will have to identify the subject or subjects you feel qualified to tutor and go through an approval process. Teachers, please encourage students who will benefit from this opportunity to participate.

Students of Color [African American/Hispanic/Latino/Native American/Asian]' Appalachian has announced its Multicultural Prospective Student Weekend, September 21-22, 2012. This free event is offered to 50 high school seniors who will stay overnight with a current student to experience Appalachian and its "Mountains of Opportunity." Lodging and transportation will be provided. Applicants must have a 3.7+ GPA and 1100 on the SAT [critical reading and math only] or 22 composite on the ACT. Attention CTE Interns: Your first journal form is due this Friday, September 14, by 2:30 p.m. You should place your journal form in the red pocket on the bulletin board outside Mrs. Padgett's door (Room 3404). Interested in studying engineering? You and your family are invited to attend an Open House at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering on Saturday, September 15th. Events will include discussions with faculty from their four engineering departments, tours of the campus and opportunities to interact with current students. Juniors & Seniors: Mark your calendars and plan to attend the Wake County College & Post Secondary Opportunities Fair scheduled at the McKimmon Center [NC State University] on Sunday, September 16th, from 2-4:30pm. Representatives from over 100 colleges, universities, community colleges and all military institutions will be on hand to answer questions from parents and students.

Don't forget to order your Pansies for the Sophomore Class fundraiser. The order forms are on the Broughton website under forms. The last day for orders is September 20. Pansies will be delivered on October 23.

October 6th is the next SAT test date. Are you ready? Put your best foot forward - sign up for the SAT Test Prep series at the WELL. The first series is scheduled on Saturday, September 15th, 22nd, and 29th from 9am-noon at the WELL and the cost is $150 for all three sessions. The cost includes an official SAT Study Guide. Partial scholarships are available with a referral from a counselor or school administrator. REGISTER NOW, space is limited. Forms are available in the Guidance Office.

Senior Scholars Considering UNC-Charlotte: Broughton has been asked to nominate high achieving seniors for the Levine Scholars Program, a four-year scholarship valued at $98,000. Students interested in being nominated may pick up applications in the Guidance Resource Center. Completed requests must be returned by Wednesday, October 3rd.

Sophomores & Juniors: The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test [PSAT/NMSQT] will be given at Broughton during the school day on Wednesday, October 17. The test measures critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills and writing skills. It is not only a good "practice SAT," it is also the qualifying test for juniors as they compete in the National Merit and National Achievement Scholarship Programs. Students who take the test receive access to My College QuickStart, a free personalized college and career planning kit. The year, sophomores will be scheduled to take the test free of charge. The fee for juniors will be $14 and checks should be made payable to "Broughton High School." The registration period is Wednesday, October 3 - Friday, October 12. Senior Scholars Considering Davidson: Broughton has been asked to nominate one senior for it prestigious John Montgomery Belk Scholarship valued at $49,000. Students interested in being nominated may pick up applications in the Guidance Resource Center. Completed requests must be returned by Friday, October 26th.

Smith College, a women's college in Massachusetts, will host its annual Women of Distinction program on November 9-11, 2012. This is a program for high school seniors that highlights the opportunities at Smith for African American, Latina, Asian American, and Native American students. Admission is competitive. Smith with provide round-trip transportation, meals and accommodations for all participants. For more information visit http://www.smith.edu/admission/wod. The Miss North Carolina Teen USA Pageant will be held at the High Pint Theater on November 9th & 10th, 2012. Contestants must be female, between the ages of 14 & 19, never married nor have given birth to a child, a United States citizen, and at least a six-month resident of North Carolina. Should the winner of the pageant be a Broughton student, our school will receive $1,000 for use in the department of our choice. If interested, see Mr. Rudder in the Guidance Resource Center. Broughton has been asked to nominate students who have shown academic excellence and leadership potential to attend the educational programs conducted by the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine [NYLF]. Nominees will be afforded the opportunity to select an intensive 10-day program in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami-Fort Lauderdale, New York City, Philadelphia, Raleigh-Durham, San Francisco or Washington, D.C. By attending the Forum on Medicine, qualifying students may also receive college credit through George Mason University. If interested, see Mr. Rudder in the Guidance Resource Center.

The March of Dimes Foundation is now accepting nominations for the March of Dimes North Carolina Youth Council. The Youth Council is comprised of 25-35 students who have been selected because of their demonstrated leadership ability and their potential for service to the March of Dimes Foundation. The purpose of the Council is to assist the March of Dimes in the design and implementation of programs targeted to the youth population, including March for Babies and Prematurity Awareness Month. Council member must commit at least one year of service and term on the Council will expire upon graduation from high school. Junior Year Athletes: Colleges are affiliated with athletic associations that have their own rules, regulations, and eligibility requirements. NCAA-Division I and II colleges can offer athletic scholarships; Division III colleges cannot. Athletes who want to go to a Division I or Division II college must have a minimum GPA in a specified number of core courses. They must also have the required SAT or ACT score. Athletes should take the ACT or the SAT in the spring of their junior year and should register with www.eligibilitycenter.org.

The University of Pennsylvania will hold its second annual fall overnight program called the Penn Early Preview on October 13th to 15th, where they will be inviting a select group of high school junior and seniors to come to campus. Broughton has been asked to nominate students of exceptional academic ability who have a serious interest in the University. Senior Scholar Athletes Considering Davidson College: Broughton has been asked to nominate up to three scholar athletes for the Bryan Scholarships [valued at $30,000 annually]. Two Bryan Scholars, one male and one female, are chosen for each incoming class. Seniors who wish to be considered for nomination should see Mr. Rudder in the Guidance Resource Center, Room 1209. Completed requests must be returned by Friday, September 14.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERCLASSMEN

Veterans of Foreign Wars' Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program. The Voice of Democracy Program is open to students in grades 9-12, who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the U.S. and its territories. Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. This year's theme is, Is Our Constitution Still Relevant? Prizes and scholarships are awarded at the local, district, state and national level. State winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., March 2-6, 2013, to tour and receive their awards, the top scholarship being $30,000. DAR's Christopher Columbus Essay Contest. The DAR sponsors this contest with the National Italian American foundation [NIAF] in honor of Christopher Columbus. Each academic year, an essay topic is chosen and contest instructions are made available online at http://www.dar.org/natsociety/essays.cfm. The contest is open to students in grades 9-12. One winning essay from each participating chapter is submitted for judging on the state level. Each state winner is judged on the divisional level and the divisional winners move on to the national level, where the winner is announced. The contest winner will receive $1,200 plus a trip to D.C. to present their essay at the Columbus Memorial on Columbus Day 2013.

Prudential Spirit of Community Award. This program is a nationwide program for students in grades 5-12 who are volunteering in their communities. Interest applicants must apply online and then submit their applications to Broughton for certification in order to be considered. Students chosen as Local Honorees receive a Certificate of Achievement from their schools. Those who qualify [100 hours of service] also receive the President's Volunteer Service Award. State Honorees receive an award of $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C. for national recognition events. National Honorees receive an additional award of $5,000, an engraved gold medallion, a crystal trophy for their school and a $5,000 grant from The Prudential Foundation for a non-profit, charitable organization of their choice. United States Senate Youth Program. This program provides a unique educational experience for outstanding high school junior and senior leaders interested in pursuing careers in public service. Two student leaders from each state will spend a week in D.C. experiencing their national government in action. All transportation, hotel and meal expenses with be provided. In addition, each delegate will also be awarded a $5,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science. Applicants must hold elected leadership positions at their school.
