SAT/ACT Prep Question of the Day

Part or all of the following sentence is underlined; beneath the sentence are five ways of phrasing the underlined material. Select the option that produces the best sentence. If you think the original phrasing produces a better sentence than any of the alternatives, select choice A.

New analyses of a fossil suggest winged insects having possibly emerged as early as 400 million years ago

(A) suggest winged insects having possibly
(B) suggest that winged insects may have
(C) suggesting that winged insects, they may have
(D) that suggests winged insects as having possibly
(E) that suggest winged insects to have possibly

Hint: Note the connection between the fossil analyses and the winged insects, and consider how to express that connection most clearly.

Answer: Choice (B) is correct. It avoids the error of the original by replacing the awkward and wordy "suggest winged insects having possibly" with the more precise and idiomatic "suggest that winged insects may have."
