STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS
Monday will be a school holiday in celebration of Labor Day. Tuesday will be a B-Day.

Underclassmen: Read as much as you can! Reading books, magazines, and newspapers will help you improve your SAT/ACT scores. How, you ask? Reading will improve your vocabulary, speed, and reading comprehension.

For a student to receive credit, all community service hours must be performed for a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. When in doubt, check it out on the organization's website. Each student must perform 25 hours of community service per year. Community service hours performed during the summer must be turned in no later than the end of 1st quarter. The deadline for all Senior hours is March 1, 2013. The deadline for all underclassmen hours is May 1, 2013.

Junior Year Athletes: Colleges are affiliated with athletic associations that have their own rules, regulations, and eligibility requirements. NCAA-Division I and II colleges can offer athletic scholarships; Division III colleges cannot. Athletes who want to go to a Division I or Division II college must have a minimum GPA in a specified number of core courses. They must also have the required SAT or ACT score. Athletes should take the ACT or the SAT in the spring of their junior year and should register with www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.

Seniors: Begin filling out your applications online; they can be saved and sent when you are ready. Transcripts may be sent, but will not have an official senior rank until Tuesday, September 25th.

Juniors & Seniors: Help is available for high school students who want to apply for college but can't afford the fees for admissions tests. If you find that the fees for the SAT, SAT Subject Tests, or ACT are a barrier to testing and applying for colleges, see Dean Sauls in the Guidance Office immediately.

SAT/ACT Prep Question of the Day

Mr. Warmington considered himself a connoisseur of fine wines, claiming he could ------- variations in taste and quality among any range of vintages he was served.

(A) purvey (B) discern (C) efface (D) mollify (E) debate

Hint: The second part of the sentence, beginning with "claiming," modifies or describes the first part.

Answer: Choice (B) is correct. If this term were inserted into the sentence, the sentence would read "Mr. Warmington considered himself a connoisseur of fine wines, claiming he could discern variations in taste and quality among any range of vintages he was served." A "connoisseur" has a sophisticated ability to appreciate and assess subtleties. If Mr. Warmington considered himself a connoisseur of wine, he would claim an ability to "discern," or detect, variations in the taste and quality of different wines.
