EVERYONE INTERESTED IN PLAYING BASEBALL AT BROUGHTON SHOULD MEET IN ROOM 358, AT 2:45 ON SEPTEMBER 5TH. THE MEETING WILL LAST ABOUT 30 MINUTES. CONTACT COACH JONES OR COACH NEWTON IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR CANNOT ATTEND.

Seniors of Color [African American/Hispanic/Latino/Native American/Asian]: Amherst College, a highly selective liberal arts college in Western Massachusetts, is offering a way for high school seniors to visit the Amherst College Diversity Open House Program with all expenses paid. The Programs are scheduled for the weekends September 22-24 or October 20-22. To apply and learn more about the programs, visit www.amherst.edu/admission/diversity.

College-Bound Seniors are encouraged to take at least one college admission test during the fall of their senior year. The next SAT test will be given at Broughton on Saturday, October 6. The regular registration deadline for this test is Friday, September 7, and the late deadline is Friday, September 21. Effective with the October 2012 test, students applying will be prompted to provide an acceptable photo during registration. The photo will appear on the Admission Ticket. The SAT has a great website - www.sat.collegeboard.com. There you can find everything you need to register and get ready for the test, as well as to send scores. Fee-waivers, not permitted for late registration except for during the October later registration period, may be requested from Dean Sauls in the Guidance Office. For more information, see Mr. Rudder in the Guidance Resource Center [Room 1209].

Students of Color [African American/Hispanic/Latino/Native American/Asian]' Appalachian has announced its Multicultural Prospective Student Weekend, September 21-22, 2012. This free event is offered to 50 high school seniors who will stay overnight with a current student to experience Appalachian and its "Mountains of Opportunity." Lodging and transportation will be provided. Applicants must have a 3.7+ GPA and 1100 on the SAT [critical reading and math only] or 22 composite on the ACT. Harvard University has announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families [less than $60,000] will pay no tuition. To find out more, visit http://www.fao.fas.harvard.edu/ or call the school's financial aid office at (617) 495-1581.

The University of Pennsylvania will hold its second annual fall overnight program called the Penn Early Preview on October 13th to 15th, where they will be inviting a select group of high school junior and seniors to come to campus. Broughton has been asked to nominate students of exceptional academic ability who have a serious interest in the University. If interested in being nominated, see Mr. Rudder in the Guidance Resource Center [Room 1209]. Our nominations must be submitted by September 17th.

Students MAY HANG club flyers on the cork strips located in each hall, and on wooden or metal doors, such as those leading to stairwells. Students MAY NOT HANG [TAPE] flyers to lockers, windows, painted walls, fire extinguisher boxes, trophy cases, or on wall murals. Remember to remove signs after the event.

Broughton's standard ABSENCE NOTE FORM [available online at http://broughton.wcpss.net under Forms, subcategory Students] should be used anytime a student is out of school - full day or partial day. The form, completed and signed by a parent/guardian, should include a contact phone number. Students may pick up a supply of Absence Forms from the Attendance Office [Main Business Office] to keep at home. A form must be returned by the student within 2 days of returning to school after an absence or the absence will be recorded as unexcused.

Thinking about pharmacy as a career option? The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has scheduled a Pharmacy Open House for high school students on Friday, September 7th from 77-8pm in Kerr Hall, Room 2001. Attendees will learn about the outstanding career opportunities in pharmacy and how to be a more competitive applicant. RSVP at www.pharmacy.unc.edu. The UNC School of Pharmacy is ranked second in the nation by US News and World Report.

Seniors interested in the engineering & technical communication programs offered at Mercer University: Broughton has been asked to nominate seniors to participate in an annual Scholarship Challenge held at the Mercer University School of Engineering in Macon Georgia on Saturday, October 20.
Nominees do not need to have applied for admission to Mercer to participate in this event. If interested, see Mr. Rudder in the Guidance Resource Center.

During Tower Time, Juniors and Seniors will have the opportunity to tutor and earn community service. If you are interested in tutoring and earning community service during the school day, please go by Ms. White's office, room 1212, where you will find a sign-up sheet outside the door. Please know that you will have to identify the subject or subjects you feel qualified to tutor and go through an approval process. Teachers, please encourage students who will benefit from this opportunity to participate.

REPEATED ANNOUNCEMENTS

Seniors: Although the ACT will be administered at Broughton on Saturday, September 8, both the registration and late registration deadlines have passed. To take the test as a STANDBY, go online at www.actstudent.org to request a Standby Ticket. The Standby Request period ends on September 3rd. Standby testing costs $43 plus the fee for your test option [$78 total for the ACT No Writing or $93.50 total for the ACT Plus Writing].

Students scheduled for Internships must see Ms. Padgett, Intern Coordinator, before Friday, August, 31st. Report to Room 3404 during lunch or immediately after school. Interns who do not see Ms. Padgett by Friday will be dropped from the Internship Program.

Young people under age 18 must obtain a worker's permit when employed, ever if employed by parents. For information about how to get a worker's permit, see Mr. Rudder in the Guidance Resource Center.

All Students Arriving to School Late in the School Day must report to the Attendance Office [Main Business Office] for an Admit Slip.

All students planning to check out during the school day must stop by the Attendance Office [Main Business Office] for an Early Release Slip. A note from parent/guardian including phone contact number is required to obtain an Early Release Slip.

Senior Scholar Athletes Considering Davidson College: Broughton has been asked to nominate up to three scholar athletes for the Bryan Scholarships [valued at $30,000 annually]. Two Bryan Scholars, one male and one female, are chosen for each incoming class. Seniors who wish to be considered for nomination should see Mr. Rudder in the Guidance Resource Center, Room 1209. Completed requests must be returned by Friday, September 14.

Senior Scholars Considering UNC-Chapel Hill: Broughton has been asked to nominate up to four high-achieving scholars for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship, one of the most highly selective of the elite undergraduate merit scholarship programs in the U.S. Students interested in being nominated may pick up applications in the Guidance Resource Center . Completed applications must be returned by Tuesday, September 11.

Senior Scholars considering NC State University: Broughton has been asked to endorse high achieving scholars for the Park Scholarship, a four-year scholarship valued at over $88,000. Students interested in being endorsed by Broughton may pick up applications in the Guidance Resource Center. Completed requests must be returned by Tuesday, September 11.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

The 31st Annual Greek Festival will be held at the NC State Fairgrounds [Exposition Center] the weekend of September 14, 15, and 16. Volunteers are needed to wait and clean tables. Friday, table cleaning starts at 5:00pm. Saturday and Sunday, table cleaning starts at 11:00am.Volunteers must wear appropriate clothing and tennis shoes for safety. No flip-flops! Tell the persons at the door that you are community service workers from Broughton. Proceed to the right of the stage behind the black curtain. A church worker will give you an apron and direct you.
