In order to improve student performance, each public school in North Carolina is directed to develop a School Improvement Plan that takes into consideration the annual performance goals for that school. The School Improvement Team (SIT) develops the School Improvement Plan.
SIT meetings are determined by the principal in consultation with the SIT Chairpersons. As required by the General Assembly, parent representatives for the SIT are nominated and elected through the PTSA. As parents leave Broughton, the process for nominating new parents to the team should be initiated by the President in consultation with the Executive Committee. The election of new parents to the SIT should occur at the fall PTSA General Membership meeting.
Parent representatives are not required to be members of the PTSA but shall reflect the racial and socioeconomic composition of the students enrolled in the school and shall not be members of the building-level staff. The parents serving on the SIT will keep the parents at Broughton informed about decisions and strategies planned for improving student performance, school safety and discipline, and waivers requested by Broughton in the School Improvement Plan.
These parents are expected to give updates through the newsletter, reports at Board meetings and by email as the School Improvement Plan is developed and amended.
