The Middle Years Programme

All Broughton freshmen and sophomores participate in the International Baccalaureate Organization’s Middle Years Programme, which seeks to promote responsible global citizenship and intercultural awareness while developing critical thinking skills and providing interdisciplinary instruction.

The MYP Curriculum:

MYP students take a balanced program of study in eight subject areas: language A (English), language B (foreign language), math, humanities, physical education, science, the arts and technology.

Though students have a great deal of choice in which courses to take in the eight curriculum areas, a typical freshman schedule might follow this pattern:

Language A: English
Language B: French, Spanish, German, Japanese or Latin
Mathematics: Algebra (1 or 2) or Geometry
Humanities: Civics and Economics or World History
Physical Education: Healthful Living A and a PE
semester elective
Science: Earth Science or Biology
Arts: Visual Art, Choral Music, Theatre Arts, Dance, Computer Art, Orchestra, Band
Technology: Technology elective

Students who are involved in Special Programs or English as a Second Language may find that they need to vary the typical schedule to meet individual needs.

The Areas of Interaction:

MYP courses use unifying themes called the Areas of Interaction, which link what students learn in one classroom with what they experience in other classes as well as the world at large. The Areas of Interaction are:

Approaches to learning: Students and teachers focus on how to approach a subject, as well as improve research, organization, time management and other important skills.

Community and service: Students look to see how they can make a difference in the lives of those in and out of school. All Broughton students are required to complete 25 hours of community service each year.

Environment: Students explore how their surroundings impact all aspects of learning as well as the responsibilities we all have to guard our world.

Health and social education: Students focus on personal health issues as well as social systems that govern how we interact with others.

Homo faber: This area of interaction explores the creative genius of people over the centuries and enables students to express themselves creatively.

The Personal Project

IB - Middle Years

Students at Broughton complete a Personal Project in the fall of their sophomore year. With the Personal Project, students select a topic of personal interest, explore the topic, and present their exploration in a creative format. Projects may take the form of an original work of art or writing, an original science experiment, the presentation of a business plan, etc. Students work with a mentor on the project and include a piece of reflective writing of at least 1,000 words at the presentation of the project.Once all the students have presented their Personal Projects, they receive a certificate of completion at a special sophomore celebration.
