Jewell 2009 Application

Application Procedures 

The 2009 Richard M. Jewell Teaching Excellence Awards are designed to promote, recognize and retain excellence in teaching at Broughton High School and are presented to Broughton faculty members, including counselors and media specialists, who exemplify the highest caliber of the teaching profession.  The Needham B. Broughton Capital Foundation administers the Jewell Awards selection process.  Two to four awards will be presented in 2009 with a monetary value between $1000 and $2500 each as determined by the selection committee and growth of the endowment monies. Applications are due to the Broughton office by February 20 at 5:00 p.m. 

Applicant criteria: 

  • Applicants must have been nominated by February 4, 2009.
  • Applicants must have been a part of the Broughton faculty for a minimum of three years.
  • Teachers, counselors and media specialists are eligible.
  • Principals and assistant principals are not eligible.
  • Any teacher currently holding a Jewell Teaching Excellence Award or Jenrette Award is not eligible.  However, if a teacher is awarded a Jewell Award, he/she may receive the Jenrette Award the following year. 

Application Process: 

  • All nominees are asked to contact Lucinda Davis of the Broughton Capital Foundation at richard.jewell.award@gmail.com with their intent to accept the nomination by Feb. 11th at 5:00 p.m.
  • The Jewell 2009 Teaching Excellence Awards Application is available on the Broughton Capital Foundation page on Broughton’s website:  http://broughton.wcpss.net
  • Applications are to be completed and submitted online by Friday, Feb. 20, at 5:00 p.m.
  • A new application must be submitted even if the nominee has previously applied for a Jewell or Jenrette Award.
  • Applicants are to deliver a copy of their spring semester class schedule to Mike Ludwick by Friday, Feb. 20, at 5:00 p.m.
  • Semi-finalists will be observed in the classroom by the selection committee during the month of March.  Finalists will be interviewed by the selection committee in April.
  • Recipients of the Jewell 2009 Teaching Excellence Awards will be officially announced during the Broughton Awards Assembly in the spring.

Selection Criteria: 

The Jewell Teaching Excellence Awards are based on the following traits of outstanding leadership in these areas: 

  • Knowledge:  The recipient shall have a thorough knowledge of his/her subject and related general information.
  • Presentation:  The recipient shall present content in an interesting manner, using a variety of instructional approaches that stimulate the student’s desire to learn.
  • Classroom management:  The recipient shall create and maintain a positive learning atmosphere in the classroom by being fair, friendly and firm.
  • Concern for the individual:  The recipient shall respect and care for the students as individuals and give guidance when needed.
  • School involvement:  The recipient shall be involved in activities outside of the classroom and be supportive of the total school program.

The selection process shall include the following components: 

  • Application    25%
  • Classroom Observation  40%
  • Personal Interview  35%
