Service is a value firmly positioned in the mission of Broughton High School. The Community Service Program is designed to teach citizenship skills and the value of serving others. Students are required to complete 25 hours of community service per year, but many students exceed this number. Community service is a requirement for graduation as well as for certain privileges in the next grade level for underclassmen. Under the guidelines of the BHS program, Community Service is any service activity that contributes to the well being of the community and/or school for which there is no grade or compensation for the individual. Service must be for a non-profit agency or an organization that depends on volunteer assistance. It is preferred that students perform a combination of service to both the school and the community. Check the DAB for opportunities.
For more detailed information, please see below for details regarding the BHS Community Service Guidelines. You may also contact Kimberly Hayden, Community Service Coordinator, at 856-7840.
Forms can be picked up in the Attendance Office Area/Community Service Office. You may also download forms by clicking on the link below.
If using the downloadable community service forms from the BHS Web site, students must print, fill out all information and turn in TWO copies. This ensures the student will receive confirmation after the service is processed and entered.

The Community Service Program is designed to teach citizenship skills and the value of serving others. Service is a value firmly positioned in the mission of Broughton High School. A community service contributes to the well-being of the community and/or the school for which there are no grades or compensation for the individual. It is also a required component of the International Baccalaureate Program.
All Broughton students are required to complete 25 hours of community service each year they are enrolled at the school. This is a requirement for graduation as well as for certain privileges such as lunch pass, parking pass or running for student government. If a student enrolls DURING the school year, the number of hours will be prorated. Students who graduate from Broughton with 25 hours MORE than the required number of hours and meet the 25 hour requirement per year will earn a silver cord to be worn at graduation and designated as “Community Service Honors” graduates.
Service hours may be earned during the summer months. Service Project Report Forms for hours earned in the summer months MUST be turned in by the end of the 1st quarter of the school year. Hours earned during the school year MUST be turned in no later than one month after completion. If hours are turned in later than these deadlines, they will be denied and returned to the student. Double hours are NOT given for Community Service Hours performed. A MAXIMUM of 10 hours per day per event will be given. Travel time is not to be included in volunteer credit hours. If a grade or compensation is given, volunteer credit will not be awarded.
Each year, there is a deadline for turning in hours. The date is published in the student handbook. For seniors, the date is usually in early March and for underclassmen in early May. These dates are necessary in order to confirm and process these hours. Seniors who have not had their community service completed by this date CANNOT be exempt from 2nd semester exams even if otherwise eligible. If underclassmen hours are turned in after this date, they will not be processed until the beginning of the next school year.
Service must be for a NON-PROFIT 501 C3 organization that depends on volunteer assistance such as Angus Barns Walk for Hope, public library, YMCA, community centers, church activities, Habitat for Humanity, Food Bank, SPCA, state museums, hospitals, Crop Walk, public schools, community agencies, International Festival, Neuse River Foundation and Builders of Hope. Hours are rewarded for actual time working.
Babysitting is accepted ONLY for church nurseries or non-profit day organizations. There is a list of non-profit daycare organizations available in the community service office.
CAPS Class teachers have a list of approved tasks at BHS for which service credit may be given. A student may NEVER grade papers or assist with any activities related to exams, tests or quizzes for service. A MAXIMUM of 5 hours can be given per year. Service credit will not be given for volunteering during an academic class, a Study Skills Class, sophomore project or an internship since a grade is received for these classes. Any tutoring must be monitored and verified by the tutored student’s teacher.
Certain class activities for which students volunteer are NOT included, examples being homecoming floats for each grade level, Prom for Juniors, and Queen of Hearts for Seniors since these are deemed to be class activities in which all members of those particular classes should participate.
Dog sitting/walking does not count.
When a teacher sponsored BROUGHTON EVENT occurs for fundraising or collection drives, the MAXIMUM number of hours a student can earn is FIVE hours per event and TEN hours for the entire year based on the following criteria:
$1 - $5 value – one hour, $6 - $10 value – two hours, $11 - $15 value – three hours,
$16 - $20 value – four hours and $21 - $25 value – five hours.
