The English department follows the North Carolina Course of study, which provides a set of English competencies for each high school course to ensure rigorous student academic performance standards that are uniform across the state. It is based on a philosophy of teaching and learning that is consistent with current research, exemplary practices, and national standards.
The purpose of the English curriculum is to teach students the language abilitlites they need to communicate effectively as individuals and as contributing members of society. Students are exposed to ideas, evaluate those ideas, and communicate their evaluations. Students develop skills in the three language strands of oral language, written language, and media/technology use.
All students must pass four years of English and the English I end of course test (EOC) in order to graduate. Students take the North Carolina writing test during their sophomore year of English. In addition, students can prepare for college level courses through Advanced Placement English III and IV clases, which include the option to take the Advanced Placement (AP) test with the potential to be awarded college credit at many colleges and universities.
