The tone and learning atmosphere of a school are dramatically improved when students and staff maintain high standards of appearance. Students should come to school in attire that is appropriate and conducive to a safe and supportive learning environment. According to WCPSS Board Policy 6410, students are expected to adhere to standards of dress and appearance that are compatible with an effective learning environment. Wake County Public Schools' policies prohibit presenting a bodily appearance or wearing clothing that is disruptive, provocative, revealing, profane, vulgar, offensive or obscene, or which endangers the health and safety of the student or others. Examples of prohibited dress or appearance at Broughton are the following:
- Hats/head coverings
- Exposed undergarments
- Excessively short or tight garments
- Sagging pants
- Bare-midriff shirts
- Attire that exposes cleavage/see-through clothing
- Strapless shirts
Students who are in violation will be required to change clothes and/or go home, and parents will be notified. Students who consistently violate the dress code policy may be subject to additional disciplinary measures.
