These clubs are related to the coursework or courses offered at Broughton High School.
Broughton Classical League (BCL)
Advisor: J. Cates
For current and former Latin students to promote enthusiasm for the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome. Meetings are the fall banquet, Saturnalia, and Rome's birthday party. Officers are elected.
Broughton Dance Company
Advisor: H. Cannaday
This Broughton class requires an audition. Dancers choreograph and produce a student choreography concert. In addition, dancers perform in a spring and winter dance concert as well as for various school events and community functions.
Chemistry Club
Advisor: P. Ligon
The Chemistry Club meets weekly in order for AP Chemistry students to provide tutoring assistance to first year chemistry students after school.
Debate Club
Advisor: A. Kaulfuss
Students meet during the year to debate significant and timely issues.
Drama Club
Advisor: J.Florin
Drama club supports and promotes the theatrical events at Broughton, such as the annual musical and play. In addition, they produce the One-Act plays and support productions acting in them, managing them, and completing lighting and costuming work.
French Club
Advisor: R. Dubois
This organization meets the second Thursday of each month in Mr. Dubois's room. All students are welcome. Officers are elected. Dues are $1.00
French Exchange Program
Advisor: R. Dubois
25 BHS students (accepted by application only) host 25 French students for two weeks. These same 25 BHS students go to France for two weeks to stay with French families. While in France, students are only responsible for airfare.
Future Teachers of America (FTA)
Advisors: M. Hixson
FTA is a nationally-affiliated organization for students (9th-12th grades) interested in pursuing a career in education as well as for students interested in working with children and adolescents not necessarily in a classroom setting. Our FTA's project focus is on school and community service while our meetings encourage candid discussion and direction for teaching in a wide variety of levels and curriculum areas.
Geography Team
Advisor: J. Forde
The Geography Team participates in an annual geography competition in the spring hosted by the International Affairs Council. All students are welcome to participate.
German Club
Advisor: B. Gulewich
The German Club promotes German culture and language use at BHS. The club meets the 2nd Friday of the month after school for baking, ice skating, games, and food in P-15. Officers are elected.
Hi-Times
Advisor: S. Winzeler
The Hi-Times is distributed six times a year, beginning in late September/early October. Distribution locations are the main lobby at the entrance to the auditorium and the cafeteria. There is an application process to become selected as a member of the newspaper staff. Applications are available in late February. The application process includes a writing sample and an interview with the faculty advisor. Selection occurs in March so students can register for the newspaper class the next school year. Latin Honor Society

Students in Latin with high "A" averages are honored for their excellent grades and enthusiasm for classical knowledge. Induction preference is given to Latin I freshmen to encourage them to continue for four years. Leadership positions are reserved for upperclassmen.
Latipac
Advisor: C. Saunders
That's "capital" spelled backwards. In August, students on the yearbook staff begin planning their coverage for the new school year. Students are placed on staff to organize content and to reflect the vision of our school and the interest of the student body. Students on staff will plan, photograph, create, sell, and distribute a 400 page yearbook. Yearbook staff selection is through application only prior to March registration. Only students in grades 10-12 are eligible for selection.
Math Club
Advisor: K. Ledger
This organization meets periodically througout the year to discuss math problems, to prepare for math competitions, and to practice the art of problem solving.
National French Honor Society
Advisor: R. Dubois
French students in French 3 or higher with an "A" average can apply to be inducted into this organization. Dues are $1.00.
National German Honor Society
Advisor: B. Gulewich
German students in German 3 or higher with an "A/B" average can apply to be inducted into this organization. Dues are $1.00.
National Spanish Honor Society
Advisor: S. Gavilan-ONeal
Eligible 10th, 11th, or 12th grade students who have shown high academic achievement in the study of Spanish can apply to be inducted into this organization. Students must be enrolled in at least second semester Spanish III and have the necessary GPA to qualify. In addition, candidates must be of good character and demonstrate an appreciation for cultural differences. Officers are elected.
National Honor Society
Advisors: R. Steinbrecher/C. Dennison
The Faculty Selection Committee selects students for membership into NHS after eligible students apply. Members must be juniors or seniors with an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or higher. Officers are elected. Selection into this organization is based on scholarship, leadership, character, and service.
Pre-College MSEN Program
Advisor: A. Closs
Designed to create interest in minority and underrepresented students in the areas of mathematics, science and engineering, it includes a Saturday Academy component held at NCSU. Academies are held in six week periods with three different sessions and include tutorial sessions in Math, Science, Communications, SAT Prep, Cultural Awareness, and College Admissions. Students with a 2.5 GPA or better are invited to participate. Colleges in our region serving as umbrellas for this program are NCSU and UNC-Chapel Hill. Each local school unit has an ACE club and PIE club for parent participation.
ROTC Club
Advisors: R. Suggs/D. Kopanski
The Rocket Club acquaints cadets with the importance of rocketry, increases their knowledge of aerospace science, provides activities and opportunities to develop leadership skills, arouses interest and inspires possible careers in aerospace. This organization meets on Thursdays.
Science Olympiad Team
Advisor: V. Sisson
Students practice and compete in a variety of science challenges, including knowledge-based tests, robotics, and building events. This team meets every other week for one hour. Students from all grade levels are welcome; regular attendance to practices is expected.
Spanish Club
Advisor: S. Gavilan-ONeal
This club meets monthly after school for a program that usually involves a guest speaker. The speaker address the club on travels, traditions in Spanish-speaking countries, or on careers and community activities related to Spanish language and culture. The club completes service projects and enjoys a meal at an area Hispanic restuarant. All students are welcome to join. Officers are elected. Dues are $1.00.
WCAP
Advisor: B. Martin
WCAP is Broughton's student-run video production facility. "Capital News," a live informational program, is viewed each day on BHS channel 5. Members of WCAP also work to produce classroom presentations, commercials, and other dynamic video productions. Crew members are selected after completing the "Video Production I" Class. Winged Words

This group of students chooses work for and designs our literary magazine, Winged Words, which contains students' creative writing and artwork.
